School & community
The DAWN™ Youth survey showed that:
- Four out of ten young adults had missed out on school activities because of their diabetes
- More than half of parents/caregivers said their child sometimes had to miss school because of their diabetes
Generally, there is general lack of:
- Diabetes-specific legislation and/or permission for school staff to provide support
- Centralized and monitored training/educational programmes for school staff on diabetes
- Availability of nurses for children with diabetes in schools
- People that are trained and permitted to assist in event of hypoglycaemia/emergencies
- Clarity on responsibilities in relation to the rights of children with diabetes to participate fully, equally and safely in all parts of school
